I have watched Star Trek since I was 16, starting with the very first episode in 1966. I loved it for the adventure and the hope it gave for the future of the human race. And I use it as an escape tool from the stress that daily life throws at you. However, nowadays, no matter how you try, you just can NEVER get away from 21st Century "wokeness" and "holier-than-thou" 20-20 hindsight even in a story set in the 24th century. So ...... let's just take a backstab at America (so that readers know that the author is a SJW and is Politically Correct) via a quote from the young Janeway "....and both my maternal grandparents and my mother herself made sure we knew the full history of this land that we lived on and not the partial account that had once been taught, in the OLD DAYS OF NATION-STATES AND MANIFEST DESTINY." Bad America! BAD! BAD! Was that sentence necessary to the story? Don't think so - don't think the story line nor character development would have suffered at all if it had been omitted. So I will be closing this book on page 5, and taking it to Half-Price books, and so save myself from any more not-so-subtle hints that I should be ashamed that the people who struggled to make this county were not perfect.
